Understand Swiss enrolment, NHS expectations and when UK-funded healthcare needs an S1 assessment.
Expect an individual premium and treatment contributions
An ordinary move from the UK to live and work in Switzerland generally means arranging Swiss compulsory basic insurance. Healthcare is not funded in the same way as NHS care: each person normally has a monthly premium and cost sharing for covered treatment. Plan these expenses alongside rent and tax rather than assume that payroll deductions handle everything.
Basic insurers must accept applicants who are subject to the obligation regardless of health. You choose a deductible and care model; supplementary products are separate and may involve medical underwriting. Start researching before the move and enrol within the applicable three-month deadline.
UK-funded healthcare is a specific entitlement
Some people may qualify for UK-funded healthcare through an S1, for example eligible pensioners or people covered by particular coordination arrangements. Eligibility is not automatic because you hold a British passport or previously paid National Insurance. Ask the relevant UK authority to confirm entitlement and follow the Swiss registration process with the Common Institution under the KVG.
An EHIC or GHIC is not a blanket replacement for health insurance after moving. Temporary visits, study and residence are different situations. Use the official UK guidance together with the Swiss authority’s assessment of your circumstances, including accompanying family members.
Prepare for continuity of care
Bring a concise medical history, current prescriptions and vaccination records. Ask a Swiss clinician about ongoing medication rather than assume every UK brand has identical availability or reimbursement. Find the first-contact provider required by your model. If S1 registration is pending, clarify interim billing arrangements rather than assume treatment will be free.
