How to choose health insurance before moving to Switzerland

Choose a municipality, budget, deductible and care model before applying for Swiss basic insurance.

Make a shortlist before booking your move

You can research Swiss insurers before arrival, but a useful quote needs your expected municipality and insurance year. Start by clarifying whether you will be subject to Swiss insurance. Students and posted workers should resolve possible coordination or exemption questions with the canton rather than buy an unsuitable policy.

List the needs that affect your choice: existing treatment, regular prescriptions, language support, a preferred practice and money available for unexpected bills. Basic insurers cannot reject you because of your health; these needs help you choose service and a workable care model, not determine your eligibility.

Compare contracts with identical inputs

Keep age, municipality, deductible and accident cover constant when comparing premiums. Then examine how each model handles the first contact, referrals and emergencies. Check that the named practice is accepting patients and included in the insurer’s current network. A model name alone does not tell you all its rules.

Choose a deductible you can fund even if you need treatment soon after moving. Compare annual premium savings against the additional cost you may have to pay yourself. If your employer provides full statutory accident insurance, ask what evidence is needed to remove accident cover from the health policy; do not remove it based only on a job offer.

Apply with a clear start date

Ask the insurer which documents it needs for a newcomer and provide the actual date your obligation begins. Keep a copy of the application and obtain written confirmation of insurer, model, deductible and start date. Check the policy when it arrives, not just the first premium.

Treat supplementary insurance separately. Do not delay compulsory enrolment while waiting for an optional product’s health assessment. If your municipality changes before arrival, update the quote and application rather than assume that the previous premium still applies.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose a policy before I have a final address?

You can shortlist insurers; confirm the municipality, premium and start date before finalising the application.

Should I choose the lowest premium immediately?

Check the provider network, first-contact rules and deductible reserve first. Price alone does not tell you whether a model works for your care.
