Health insurance for international students in Switzerland

Check student exemptions, EHIC arrangements, employment and Swiss insurance costs with your canton.

Your home system and employment matter

Being enrolled at a university does not automatically exempt you from Swiss health insurance. Students from EU/EFTA countries or the UK who are not working and remain covered by their home social security system can use the relevant EHIC arrangement for medically necessary treatment. If they start working in Switzerland, the place-of-work principle generally changes the insurance obligation.

Private cover is assessed differently. Students from outside EU/EFTA/UK can apply to the canton for exemption if the policy provides equivalent cover. The FOPH describes an exemption period of three years, potentially extendable for another three. Approval, conditions and supporting documents must be checked with the responsible canton.

Apply early and retain the decision

Gather proof of study, residence, home insurance and the policy’s benefits. An insurer advertising a “student plan” cannot grant the cantonal exemption itself. Ask the canton whether it needs a specific form signed by the foreign insurer, and what you must do while the application is pending.

Keep the written decision and its validity dates. Report changes such as employment, a different policy or the end of studies. A decision based on one set of circumstances does not necessarily remain valid after they change. Your university’s international office can help identify the authority but cannot replace its assessment.

If Swiss basic insurance is required

Compare your municipality and age group. A 22-year-old uses young-adult premiums but adult deductible rules, not child rules. Include accident cover if there is no qualifying employer protection. Do not choose the highest deductible just to fit a monthly student budget without a reserve for treatment. Check premium reduction with the canton; student status alone does not establish entitlement.

Frequently asked questions

Does a part-time job affect my exemption?

It can. Contact the canton before starting; do not assume a small job has no insurance consequences.

Can my university approve an exemption?

No. It can provide guidance, but the competent authority decides whether the conditions are met.
