Health insurance in Switzerland: the first 90 days

Follow a practical arrival checklist while respecting the legal three-month enrolment deadline.

The deadline is three months, not always 90 days

The title describes your initial settling-in period. The standard legal deadline is three months from the beginning of the insurance obligation, which is not necessarily 90 calendar days. Record your actual residence start date and confirm any uncertain deadline with the canton. Do not use a holiday arrival date or the day a permit arrives without checking which event starts your obligation.

With timely enrolment, basic cover generally starts retroactively when the obligation begins. Premiums are due for that period too. Keep treatment receipts while registration is being processed; reimbursement depends on statutory benefits, model rules and cost sharing.

First weeks: establish your situation and apply

After registering your residence, gather identification, address details and the documents requested by your chosen insurer. If you might qualify for an exemption, approach the competent canton immediately with your foreign policy and evidence of student or posting status. An application for exemption is not itself a decision; ask what to do about enrolment while it is pending.

Compare your municipality and profile, select a model you can follow and submit the application well before the deadline. Check accident protection with your employer. Keep proof of submission and respond promptly to document requests.

Before the deadline: check confirmation and invoices

Check the policy start date, model, deductible and every family member’s enrolment. If no confirmation arrives, follow up with the insurer instead of assuming that silence means completion. Make sure the municipality has any insurance evidence it requires.

Late enrolment generally means cover starts only from enrolment and an unjustified delay can lead to a premium surcharge. The canton may assign an insurer if you fail to comply. If the deadline has passed, contact the canton and insurer immediately; do not assume ordinary retroactive protection.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wait three months to save premiums?

No. Timely cover and premiums generally apply from the beginning of the obligation.

What if my policy confirmation has not arrived?

Follow up with the insurer, keep proof of submission and ask the canton if the deadline is approaching. Do not treat silence as confirmation.
