Basic vs. supplementary health insurance in Switzerland

Prioritise compulsory cover and assess optional insurance separately when relocating to Switzerland.

Basic insurance is the foundation

Swiss basic insurance covers the legally defined benefits for illness, maternity and accidents unless accident cover is suspended because of qualifying protection elsewhere. Authorised basic insurers must accept eligible applicants without medical selection. Choosing a more expensive basic insurer does not purchase a larger statutory benefit package.

Premiums and care models differ. A cheaper model may change the required first contact rather than add or remove the statutory benefit catalogue. Check referrals and provider availability. Your relocation priority is timely, correct enrolment for every person, not purchasing every optional product in a combined offer.

Supplementary benefits depend on the contract

Supplementary insurance is voluntary private insurance. Products may cover selected dental costs, hospital comfort or additional services, but there is no single standard package. Read exclusions, maximum reimbursements, waiting periods, territorial scope and cancellation terms. A benefit mentioned in marketing may still be limited by the contract.

An insurer may ask health questions, impose exclusions or decline supplementary cover. Answer accurately and wait for binding acceptance. A basic application must not be held back simply because optional underwriting is unfinished. Basic and supplementary policies can be with different insurers.

Decide on gaps, not on a bundle name

List what you want beyond statutory cover and compare it with the actual contract. For example, wanting a particular hospital room is a different requirement from continuing a prescribed outpatient treatment. Compare the annual price against the benefit limits and your ability to pay those extras yourself.

If you already have foreign supplementary cover, ask whether it remains valid after Swiss residence and whether it duplicates the new policy. Do not cancel valuable existing supplementary insurance before you have binding replacement cover. Our resident guide explains the benefit differences in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Must I buy supplementary insurance to get basic cover?

Can the two policies be with different insurers?
