Distinguish residence, cross-border work, posting and employer accident insurance before enrolling.
Your work situation matters more than the expat label
“Expat” is not a separate Swiss basic insurance category. If you move to Switzerland and work here, the ordinary compulsory insurance system generally applies. You choose your own basic insurer; a salary package mentioning insurance does not prove that this obligation has been fulfilled.
Living abroad while working in Switzerland is a cross-border situation, not an ordinary relocation. Posting, working in several countries or receiving foreign pensions can also change the competent system. Describe your residence and actual employment arrangements to the responsible authority. A temporary contract does not by itself remove the insurance obligation.
Keep illness and employer accident insurance separate
Employer accident insurance does not replace basic cover for illness. Employees working at least eight hours a week for the same employer are normally also insured for non-occupational accidents through that employer. Ask for confirmation before requesting suspension of accident cover in your health policy.
If you work fewer hours, are self-employed or have a gap before employment starts, do not assume full employer protection. Check the transition dates as well as the contract. If your job ends, review accident cover promptly. Keep the confirmation with your health insurance records.
Posted workers and dependants
A genuine posting can keep you in another social security system if the relevant agreement and conditions apply. Obtain the official posting evidence and ask the canton how to document the health insurance position. An international private policy alone is not posting evidence. Assess accompanying family members separately; employment or residence differences can change their position.
Frequently asked questions
Is a corporate international policy enough?
Only if the applicable legal system or a recognised exemption permits it. Confirm this with the authority, not just the employer or insurer.
What changes if I become self-employed?
Review accident protection and the applicable social security system; do not assume employer insurance continues.
