Separate keeping foreign cover from legally replacing compulsory Swiss health insurance.
A foreign policy and a legal exemption are different
You may be able to keep foreign insurance as additional cover, depending on its contract. That does not establish that you may use it instead of Swiss compulsory insurance. Ordinary Swiss residents generally need a Swiss basic policy even if an international private plan advertises worldwide treatment.
The key question is which social security system is legally competent or whether the canton can grant a recognised exemption. Relevant situations can include certain students, posted workers and people subject to international coordination. An insurer’s promise to pay bills is not the same as an authority’s decision about the insurance obligation.
What to submit and what to ask
Provide the canton with residence dates, work or study status, policy wording, territorial cover and evidence of the foreign legal arrangement. Ask which forms or official certificates are required. Do not assume equivalent benefits merely because a plan has a high annual limit; exclusions, cost sharing and duration also matter.
Ask whether you must arrange Swiss enrolment while the exemption request is pending. Retain the written decision and its validity conditions. Report changes in employment, studies, residence or insurance. A pending request or a previous exemption under different circumstances is not reliable evidence of current exemption.
Avoid both gaps and unnecessary double cover
Coordinate end and start dates in writing before cancelling foreign insurance. Review whether keeping it adds benefits you actually need and whether residence in Switzerland changes its terms. If both policies exist, ask how claims are coordinated; two policies do not mean you can claim the same expense twice. Compare Swiss basic premiums separately from the price of an international plan.
Frequently asked questions
Does equivalent foreign cover always qualify?
No. You must also meet the legal conditions for the applicable exemption or coordination arrangement.
Can I assume I am exempt while an application is pending?
No. Ask the canton how to fulfil the enrolment obligation while waiting for its decision.
