Plan the transition from German insurance to Swiss cover without confusing relocation with cross-border work.
A move changes the usual insurance arrangement
If you relocate your home to Switzerland and work here, you generally enter Swiss compulsory health insurance. Do not assume that German statutory membership or an employer contribution continues unchanged. Tell your German insurer about the move and ask which evidence it needs to determine the end or continuation of your cover.
Each person needs an assessment. German family insurance does not automatically become a Swiss family policy: under ordinary Swiss rules, spouses and children each have a separate premium. Build your budget using the actual future Swiss municipality and the profile of every family member.
Cross-border work and posting need separate checks
Keeping your home in Germany while taking a Swiss job is different from moving to Switzerland. International coordination and possible option rights can apply to cross-border workers. Do not import advice for German-resident commuters into an ordinary Swiss-resident application. Working remotely across borders can also affect the competent social security system.
If you are genuinely posted by a German employer, obtain the relevant official confirmation and clarify your health cover with the canton. A private German policy’s worldwide benefits do not automatically create an exemption from Swiss insurance.
Coordinate dates and transfer treatment information
Confirm your Swiss insurance start date and the German insurer’s written decision. Keep prescriptions, specialist reports and pending reimbursement records. Choose a Swiss care model that can accommodate continuing treatment, and contact the insurer about the referral process. Your EHIC is not a general replacement for resident insurance after an ordinary move.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep German private insurance?
Possibly as additional cover, but replacing Swiss compulsory insurance requires the applicable legal basis or recognised exemption.
Is a cross-border option the same as a relocation exemption?
No. Your actual residence and work arrangements determine which rules apply. Ask the competent authority.
